LADY RAIDERS BATTLE ADVERSITY IN TOUGH CONFERENCE MATCHUP AGAINST WALTERS STATE
MORRISTOWN– Despite a hard-fought effort and flashes of growth throughout the match, the Roane State Lady Raiders fell to Walters State on Tuesday night. Facing one of the toughest opponents in the conference on the road, the Lady Raiders showed determination and resilience while adapting to a new rotation and competing with a limited roster.
Head coach Jaymee Hannan said the night was a challenging one, but she saw valuable signs of progress as her team continues to overcome adversity.
"It was probably not one of our finest moments," Hannan said. "We're dealing with some things due to unforeseen circumstances. We lost one of our six-rotation players and have another who's injured, so we're having to adjust around that. It's going to take some time because when everything gets thrown up in the air, we have to figure out where all the pieces land and try to put them back together."
The Lady Raiders relied on several younger athletes to fill key roles, including McKenna Cameron, Kenlee Hayden, and Hannah Thompson at setter, along with Madyson Bethea, Eddy Brown, and Kaitlyn Foster providing consistency at the net.
Hannan said the team had only one practice to install a new system before the match against Walters State.
"That's just hard," Hannan said. "But there were moments of really good communication, and they worked hard. There were also moments of chaos because we'd thrown them into something new, but they never stopped competing."
Roane State's strongest performance came in the second set, where the Lady Raiders battled point-for-point and pushed Walters State to the edge.
"We started to play like ourselves," Hannan said. "We picked up on things we'd talked about in practice, started communicating better, and hit smarter — not necessarily harder — but by finding the open spots on the court. We had the set right there until the end, but a couple of bad plays got us when it was tied at 24."
The match also marked the return of Ellie Murrell, who saw her first action after being sidelined the first half of the season with an injury.
"It's going to take her a minute to reacclimate," Hannan said. "You can practice, but it's different when you get back into a live match. We're glad to have her back."
Now in the midst of a seven game road stretch, Hannan said the focus is on steady improvement and staying connected as a team.
"We talked after the game about trusting the process," she said. "Right now, we're fighting through an uphill battle, but we'll be better for it. We're focusing on the little things — serve, receive, picking up tough balls, seeing the court better, communicating, and staying positive. The strongest steel is forged through the fire of adversity, and I have to believe that's what's happening for us."
The Lady Raiders continue their road swing this weekend at the Walters State Invitational Tournament before returning home next weekend for the final two home games of the season.
