ROANE STATE ATHLETICS WELCOMES STUDENTS FOR INAUGURAL SOCCER CAMP
Roane State concluded its annual youth soccer camp this month, welcoming participants to campus from June 12–14. The three‑day event, led by Roane State Women's Soccer Coach Donnie Green, featured skill clinics, scrimmages, and character‑building sessions.
"We saw tremendous energy. Kids arrived eager and by the end, you could really tell they had improved," Green said. "Their game was better, and their confidence had grown."
Campers rotated through age and skill‑based stations focused on ball control, tactical awareness, and teamwork. Upperclassmen from the college squad assisted in leading drills and played exhibition matches alongside participants.
"I believe the best learning happens when kids see the game in action," Green said. "Our college players mentoring younger athletes creates an atmosphere where learning feels natural."
The curriculum emphasized technical development like dribbling under pressure, precision passing, shooting accuracy, and small‑sided games to teach quick decision‑making. Defender drills and goalkeeper training sessions rounded out the offerings. Beyond pure skills, Green and his staff underlined the importance of mental toughness, respect, and work ethic.
"Our goal wasn't only to refine footwork," Green explained. "We wanted campers to leave knowing the value of discipline both on and off the field."
Staffers held brief talks on sportsmanship and nutrition, reinforcing lessons about hydration and proper rest. Each day concluded with an awards ceremony that emphasized character over statistics, recognizing effort, improvement, and positive attitude.
"We handed out more recognition for hustle and heart than for scoring goals," Green said. "It sends a clear message that effort is everything."
Parents were invited to attend also, and campers showcased their progress in front of family and friends. One parent remarked that her daughter "came home more excited than I've ever seen about sports and teamwork."
"Watching parents' reactions Saturday evening was a highlight," Green said. "When I see proud kids and smiling moms and dads, I know we are achieving something special."
In addition to the on‑field work, campers got a glimpse of college life. They toured athletics facilities and met with current Roane State athletes, giving them insight into what it's like to play at the collegiate level.
"Planting the seed about college has long‑term impact," Green added. "If one camper goes on to play here or elsewhere, that's a win for all of us."
Roane State plans to expand next year's camp. Applications are expected to open in early 2026, with dates to be announced this fall.
When finalized, all upcoming camp information will be shared on the Roane State Athletics website at roanestate.edu/athletics.
