LADY RAIDERS FINISH SECOND AT NORTHWEST INVITATIONAL
CORINTH, Miss. — The Roane State's women's golf team delivered its strongest performance of the spring this week, April 6-7, finishing second at the Northwest Invitational while continuing its steady climb toward postseason play.
The Lady Raiders posted team rounds of 376 and 369 for a two-day total of 745, securing runner-up honors in a six-team field at Shiloh Ridge Athletic Club in Mississippi.
Head coach Rick Maharry said the result reflects both the team's growth and its ability to compete against top-level competition.
"We finished second, which is our best finish of the season," Maharry said. "We were behind Northwest Mississippi, and they're ranked 10th nationally, so to be right there behind them was really good for us."
Roane State opened the tournament with a strong first round, sitting in second place and trailing by just 12 strokes. The lineup produced one of its most complete team efforts of the year, despite dealing with familiar challenges on the greens.
"They all played well the first day," Maharry said. "We had some putting issues with fast greens again, but overall they did really well."
Sophomore Raegan Corvette paced the Lady Raiders early, sitting near the top of the leaderboard after day one. She maintained that consistency into the final round, finishing sixth overall.
Sydney Romer delivered the team's top individual performance, using a strong second round to climb into fifth place and earn all-tournament team honors — the first such recognition for Roane State under Maharry's tenure.
Romer's performance highlighted a resilient second-day effort from the Lady Raiders. After a slow start in the final round, Roane State regrouped and stabilized its scoring to maintain its position near the top of the field.
"They came out and struggled early the second day, but they brought it back," Maharry said. "Even though we didn't play quite as well as the first day, we still finished well under our yearly average."
Maharry credited the team's ability to respond under pressure as a key takeaway heading into the postseason. Roane State's 745 total marked one of its lowest team scores of the spring and continued a trend of measurable improvement each week.
"They've been getting better each of the last three weeks," he said. "Every tournament, we've improved, and that's exactly what you want to see this time of year."
Reagan Bailey also contributed a steady performance, finishing under her scoring average and helping anchor the team's overall consistency across both rounds.
With the TCCAA District tournament approaching, Roane State now turns its attention to final preparations for the three-day event scheduled for April 26-28 in Lake City, Florida.
Maharry said the focus over the next week will be on refining individual areas of improvement rather than making sweeping changes.
"Each player has something a little different they need to work on," he said. "For some it's putting, for others it's chipping or iron play coming into the greens. We're just going to keep practicing and focus on those areas."
The recent results suggest the Lady Raiders are peaking at the right time. After navigating injuries and inconsistency earlier in the season, the team has now posted consecutive strong finishes and continues to close the gap against top-ranked competition.
"For us to shoot 745 and finish second against that kind of field says a lot about where we're at right now," Maharry said.
With momentum building and postseason play on the horizon, Roane State will look to carry its recent form into districts as it continues its push toward another national tournament appearance.
