LADY RAIDERS COMPETE IN NATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Roane State Community College women's golf team is currently competing in the 2025 NJCAA Division II Women's National Championship, held May 13–16 at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone, Iowa.
Cedar Pointe is a respected 18-hole course featuring a classic front nine and a more modern back nine. With mature trees, bunkers, and water hazards, the course presents a challenging layout for the nation's top women's golfers.
This year marks the first-ever women's golf championship hosted at Cedar Pointe, a collaborative effort between Des Moines Area Community College and the NJCAA.
"All of our teams are trying to compete to get to the national level," Roane State Athletics Director David Lane said. "Our women's golf team is doing that. They are competing and making a name for themselves. We're really pleased and proud of our young ladies to be able to help elevate us on a national level."
Roane State women's golf has only been active for a few seasons, but in that short time the program has excelled.
In May 2024, the Lady Raiders won their first Region 7 championship, marking a significant milestone in the program's history. Then in August 2024, the team achieved its first national ranking, further highlighting its rapid development.
Head Coach Rick Maharry joined Roane State Athletics in August 2024, bringing more than 50 years of golf experience to the program. A former competitor at Truman State University and on the Florida Amateur Tour, Maharry also spent a decade coaching high school golf. His experience and leadership have proven valuable for the Lady Raiders.
"Rick has done a great job since he came in," Lane said. "We've seen a ton of development with the team, and not just with their techniques, but also with their mental game. He is very supportive, and that shows in his care and dedication to the team and how he has elevated them to this level. They are playing as one of the top 16 teams in the country."
After the first round, Roane State stood 11th on the leaderboard with a team score of 62-over par. Sophomore Georgia Cater led the Lady Raiders with an 8-over performance. Wednesday's tee time is set for 9 a.m. CT.
