Roane State's head softball coach achieved a major milestone with the Lady Raiders this season when he earned his 300th career victory. Coach Marty McDaniel hit the 300 mark thanks to a hard-fought 7-6 win over Jackson State on February 28.
The Lady Raiders battled their way to what would become a historic victory, highlighting the competitive spirit that has become a trademark of McDaniel's teams.
Fans described the celebration after the final out as a fitting tribute to a coach who has dedicated his career to building winners on and off the field.
Following the game, McDaniel reflected on the journey which led to that special moment.
"I would like to thank all the players and assistant coaches past and present who have been part of these 300 wins," McDaniel said. "I would also like to thank the administrators at Armstrong and Roane State for giving me the opportunity to do what I love. This is truly something that happens because of great players and support from everyone involved in the program."
McDaniel took over at Roane State in 2019 after helming the program at Armstrong State University. Fellow coaches and athletics staff said McDaniel quickly transformed the Lady Raiders into one of the most respected programs in the conference.
"His emphasis on hard work, player development, and a winning mindset has not only elevated the team's performance but also created a culture of excellence that ripples across the entire department," said David Lane, Roane State's director of athletics.
Lane praised McDaniel's contributions and noted his broader impact on the college's athletics community.
"Surpassing 300 career victories doesn't just happen without a vision and incredible work ethic," Lane added. "Coach McDaniel has brought experience along with a spirit of expectation and achievement that drives our programs to achieve more."
Under McDaniel's leadership, the Lady Raiders have consistently raised the bar, earning postseason berths, producing standout student-athletes, and setting new standards for success.
"That milestone win over Jackson State was more than just another tally in the record books for us," Lane said. "It was a celebration of years of dedication, a testament to the players and coaches who have been part of the journey, and a promise of even bigger things ahead for Roane State Softball."
Since late February, Coach McDaniel has already increased his total win tally to 316. Six of those added victories were dominant wins over Pellissippi State and Cleveland State. In the most recent series with Pellissippi on April 25, both games ended after five innings with scores of 18-0 and 13-2.
McDaniel and the Lady Raiders will be back in action at Chattanooga State on April 28 to close out the regular season. Game times are available on the team schedule page.
